It is shallow in the summer but in the winter it becomes very deep and often bursts its banks. In 1903 Harry Wilson came to our town from Yorkshire. He came here because he had worked in a wool mill in his home town of Sheffield and he decided he wanted to come to New Zealand to make his fortune. He left Liverpool on a boat called the Steamship and it took six weeks for the boat to reach New Zealand. The boat was very full and had many people from England who wanted to come here because they heard that there was work here and that land was very cheap. (The Steamship, c/o National Library Archives 1903) You could buy an acre of land for a one pound 25 shillings then. He arrived in Dunedin but couldn't find work there so he travelled by train to our town and stayed at the Central Hotel in Middle Street.
