Hints and HTML Reference Sites

General:

  • Ask the Coordinator for help whenever you are stuck. Phone 04-382 6510 or by email livingheritage@cwa.co.nz
  • Always sign off when you have finished to prevent others gaining access to the site.
  • Take time in planning your pages. i.e. what content you want to present, the layout, text and pictures, and how pages might link together.
  • Make use of other staff or students who may have some knowledge of HTML
  • Always check you have permission to use material belonging to others before using it in your online project. (This includes text, images, and photos and interviews of students and individuals)
  • You are not able to add links to external websites or documents from your pages. Links will be made to Living Heritage, TKI, and any other Living Heritage projects created by your school. You could refer to your school website by typing the URL address, without creating a link to it.
  • To view the list of the pages created within your site, click on “stories” from the “Editors Only” menu at the top of the page.
  • Use only the first two items in the “Editors Only” menu do not use the other options in the menu, e.g. Prefs, Admin, without the approval of the Living Heritage Coordinator.
Presentation:
  • Keep your pages clean and simple, but don’t be afraid to be creative, and make then interesting.
  • You can add wordart as an image if you want to create a different looking heading, or text to a page.
  • Select text colour, size and font carefully, for optimum readability
  • Text should remain on a white background
Images:
  • Select images carefully. They should be appropriate to the text. (You can browse for images in Internet search engines such as google.com. make sure you use copyright free images sourced from the Internet)
  • We suggest you keep your images within a reasonable size, not exceeding a maximum of 30KB.
  • Images for your pages need to be saved as a GIF, or JPEG. Wordart, Clipart, or simple pictures with limited colours, save as a GIF. Photos, or complicated pictures, save as a JPEG
  • Do not save any images as a BMP.
  • Name all your images with sensible names that are easy identifiable, and not too similar. e.g. “schoolgate”, “MrSmith” , “hall1925”
  • To view the list of images saved to your site click on “pictures” from the ”Editors Only” menu at the top of the page.

Oral Recordings:
Oral recordings can be attached to a website as mp3 files and can be streamed from your site given the user has a streaming capable player such as windows media player installed on their PC. We suggest however that if you wish to use this facility you contact the co-ordinator on a case by case basis for instructions and assistance.

Useful HTML Code:
When editing pages, you can add HTML tags to format the text. Some basic HTML code that you might use in you pages include:

Text breaks: Insert <br> between lines of text to separate them onto another line. This is called a line break.
Font size: Insert a font size tag such as font size = +2 in front of text that you want to change the size of. This would increase the size of the font to +2, you could for example change the font to +3, +4 etc.
Tables: Tables, together with the associated tags of Table rows and table cells can be used to create an excel style tale structure to your pages with words beside pictures or multiple pictures across a page.
